A Thai court has sentenced Anon Numpa, a pro-democracy leader, to four years in prison.

He was convicted for defaming the royal family during a 2020 protest.Anon called for revising laws that protect the king and his relatives from criticism.On Tuesday, the Bangkok Criminal Court ruled his speech defamed (lese majesty) the royal family.The court also fined him $550 for breaching an emergency order active at the protest.In Thailand, “Article 112” punishes any royal insults with up to 15 years in jail.

Critics say this law often targets political opponents.Many activists stood by Anon outside the court building.

Andrea Giorgetta of the International Federation for Human Rights criticized the long sentence.Thai Activist Jailed for Royal Insult – Anon Numpa.
